Hello all,

I have an opportunity to move to Texas and have to pick from the Houston, San Antonio, or Austin. When I am looking at Houston I am looking at specifically around the Spring area. What I am asking from you is which city would you pick and why. Any specific reasoning (sports, outdoors, low crime, cheap housing, good airports etc) would be appreciated. A little about me: I am married without kids (although we hope to start a family in the near future), we would like to rent for a few years and then buy/build a house. We would prefer to rent a house but the right apartment complex would work too. Living near the nightlife is not required, we would rather that it be available within a reasonable distance as opposed to being in it 24/7. Your help in this matter is appreciated.

What kinds of things do you like to do? Are you more of an outdoors person or someone who likes fine arts and museums? Do you attend pro sporting events? What about your musical tastes? Do you attend live music events and festivals?

All three are great cities, but each of them has different strong points. Ideally you'd want to match your likes with what each city has to offer in that area.

You will get a lot of opinions about which city is "best" - what you need to decide is which city is best for your wants and needs.

Austin is probably going to have the highest COL of the three. The city is experiencing tremendous growth and prices are going up as a result. Your money will go further in Houston or SA.

We do enjoy sporting events, festivals and concerts (rock), museums are a plus. I enjoy fishing. Good farmers markets are a HUGE plus. I had assumed that Austin would have the highest COL but we are not ruling that out. budget for housing would be between 900-1200.

Sports, museums, festivals, fishing, rock concerts... Houston would be the one having all of those to a good degree.

Do you have jobs lined up? Why Spring? That's not one of the best areas of Houston (not bad, there are just much better if it's suburbs you're looking for.)

That budget is going to be VERY tough in Austin unless you are willing to endure a long commute from an ex-urb, or live in a small place in an iffy neighborhood. Also, Austin has zero professional sports teams. They do, however, have the best local live music scene.

Almost every decent-sized town in Texas has a farmer's market in the summer.

San Antonio, obviously, will have the least fishing options, and Houston will have the most.

I am not totally sold on Spring now that I have read more about it. I do have a job (I'll be transferring with my company) and for all intensive purposes I will be telecommuting with my home office since I will be traveling alot. To be honest my biggest concern here is that my wife will be safe when I am traveling. We are starting to narrow down our options to San Antonio, but where is that city is a good area? Hill Country? Stone Oak? etc?

You will have to ask in the SA forum for more specific advice, but I personally prefer the hill country area to the west/northwest (Boerne, if you can swing the rent).

Stone Oak?

Stone Oak is a safe area with a mix of middle class on up to wealthy individuals. Its situated in rolling to rugged hills and has a mix of smaller oaks and cedar trees. It has an abundance of shopping option but with all the construction comes traffic issues.

Hill Country Village?

I'm assuming you meant Hill Country Village and the city is small and very safe. It is surrounded by San Antonio and Hollywood Park. It is very close to stone oak but with less traffic.

I have a relative currently living in the Stone Oak area of San Antonio and he says traffic there is a daily hell.
