I actually got excited for a few seconds, thinking by the headline (in another article) that Texas was no longer going to require yearly inspections.

I got very spoiled in not having to have them in another state.

Texas the state will save itself some money, but it won't do us the residents any good. :-(

We, the residents, are the state .

That may be true, but this new change won't save us residents as individuals any money.

The state itself, OTOH, will save the cost of the stickers, but will in turn probably make the same amount of money by charging more for the single sticker.

If our government saves any money, then we save money, I guess. They get all their money from us (or, well, from China), so it is always good to have a more efficient gov't.

It is usually always good to have more efficient--and LESS intrusive government.

Two million dollars these days seems like nothing now, but I suppose this is a start.

The real benefit to this is the elimination of fake inspection stickers. Police can verify registration through their computers, but cannot verify inspection stickers except by looking at them. By tying registration to a database of inspection results, people will no longer be able to use fake or altered stickers. Saving money is just something politicians like to point out because that's what most people care about.

Sticker fraud will be eliminated but there still has to be some paperwork submitted to the State as proof of inspection to get the vehicle registered. Vehicles that should fail inspection will still be passed just like before. I doubt the new process will question the inspection document as long the inspector is on the States “approved” list.

The emissions testing, though, is computerized, and an inspection site falsifying (or attempting to) those computer records will be putting itself in a very bad spot. Other failures (brakes, tires, etc) will be a little 'safer' to falsify a passing result.
