Checking the weather graphs here, Austin January Weather 2014 - AccuWeather Forecast for TX 78701 last winter was not unusually cold, there wasn't even a single daily record low temperature set for the entire 3 months from January to March.
Well at least Midland had a harsh winter last year CptnRN.It seemed harsh due to my personal experience.

It was unusually cold here in Alpine, too--we don't usually have both snow and two ice storms in NOVEMBER in West Texas.

I think most of West Texas and the Panhandle were both unusually cold.

I hope we have another real winter again, too! Loved it!

I think that first ice storm hit pretty soon after Halloween. It was also a record-breaking cold snap for November at the airport.I just hope the real cold doesn't hit until December.

I've seen a prediction that the jet stream will run further north like it did last year so there will be more 'polar vortex' and cold in an easterly direction from Texas.

So I'll predict mild with a few drops to 30/20's late January or in February. Maybe some ice, but no snow.

Disclaimer: all that depends on where in Texas you are at the time the prediction is right or wrong

No, no, October, LOL!

It has just been a really nice year as far as weather overall goes--nice, fairly temperate summer with only a few days 100+, with a lot of mid-to-high 80s most of the rest of the time here.

But the best fun was heavy snow in Midland on Halloween night--I was out pulling up the last of the chile bushes to take inside!

To each their own I suppose. This summer was not what I like in a summer.I love the heat but I am glad this has been a wetter and more moist year.

Ok guys, almost every forecast, just saw one, has Texas with colder than AVERAGE, for the winter. I only use the term NORMAL for mid July to mid-late August. Most any day of the rest of the year can very in temperature greatly. Such as on November First it can be 40 for a high in Tyler or maybe 80.

The statistics "folks" started out adding those to numbers together and divided by 2 and got a NORMAL temp. of 60, lol. All the numbers are not NORMALS they are a average, a mean average at that, as opposed to median or mode. A few stations and the weather channel may use the correct term, average. Sorry, just a little frustration here, like when, it seems 90% of all people say further West, instead of farther West. Oh yeah, I know I make a lot of mistakes, but I'm not being paid to be correct, lol

What year was this? The first freak ice storm we had last year was a week or two after Halloween. I know because I remember last year's Halloween very well: A friend and I had too much to drink at Rockin' Rodeo and had to be taken home, only to realize that the next morning we had left our phones in our vehicles. I had to walk 2.5 miles through downtown Midland (in my costume!) to get to my vehicle!
