I ran into my long time tax accountant this afternoon at Starbucks and we started chatting about things. He was concerned about his daughter wishing to attend Baylor University. She wants to go because she likes their scholar program and all of her friends are going there.

He has no objection as Baylor is a good school but he was wondering if it's even safe for a head covering Arab girl to go to a zero diversity institution as Baylor and live in a town like Waco. She was born and brought up here in Frisco but town and schools are very diverse here.

I don't know much about Waco or Baylor but it is common knowledge that it's a VERY conservative school and Waco is a rough town. Any opinions?

This is like one of those threads people from Maine start in the Texas forum. "I'm thinking about moving to Texas, but I'm not sure I can ride a horse every day or milk a cow. How long did it take to get used to it? I want to move there because I like sand, cactus and I've heard you can own 2 million acres and a 14,000 square foot house in downtown Houston for ten dollars. I would like to hear from people who live there, if they even have Internet in that state."

There's so much wrong here I don't even know where to start.

Just for humor, I Googled diversity and found the following Niche ranking. I only looked up two schools:

Baylor - ranked 744

Texas - ranked 132

see https:/colleges.niche.com/rankings/most-diverse-campus/

Based on opinions like yours instead of statistics. I look forward to your assuredly negative opinion on the next Baylor / Waco thread as well. I'm sure it will be fair.

You bet. I'll always tell the truth about Waco exactly as it is. Better for people to know the facts before they make the move and learn the hard way.

That is hilarious! What is even more funny is that there is a lot of truth to it! Reminds me of one post in the Texas forum where a Ca native was dreading moving to Texas since - her words - Texas didn't have any stores like Whole Foods.... She probably expected to see tumbleweeds rolling down the mountains outside Galveston.

Anyway, go check out Baylor. Ask for a tour. I'd bet since it's a major university, there will be a lot of international students at least at the graduate level.

I'm sure she will be fine. Waco while conservative, but still are tolerable and open to other religions.

Well, my sister went there long ago, before the break with the Conservative Baptist Convention (Association? not sure on the exact name); anyway, at the time, the school rules quite closely matched the religious doctrine - no dancing, no drinking, etc. The one that got her was she got pregnant, which was against school rules. Even if you were married, they generally 'encouraged' you to not enroll for the semester you were due to deliver. She was not married, so they 'allowed' her to withdraw (vs. expelling her).

I know it is somewhat more moderate now, but I would still look into it a bit.

I'm sure no dancing, drinking, no dorm sex, no babies on campus rules would be okay by most parents, no matter baptist or not.

This is what I was thinking. Not a whole lot of difference between a "conservative" Baptist & a "conservative" Islamic except for the messenger.

& Depending on one's definition of "diverse", Waco would possibly be more diverse than Frisco.
