Obviously Harvard is the superior school, it's the best school in the world. However it seems that the reputation of UT here in Texas is top notch and employers will have a preference for grads of the school over others.

No. There are no schools in Texas that are comparable to Ivy League.

As Ghost mentions....Rice would be the closest.

Rice is not overrated. Rice professors and students do cutting edge science. And university rankings are based on number and strength of scientific publications. There are very strong papers continuously coming out of Rice and that keeps this university alongside with ivy league colleges in various rankings. However, real world skills is a different story and Rice is not necessarily great for conventional jobs.

Look at Rice's global university ranking on us news, 84. UT is ranked 30 in the world. UT is a better university overall though it's undergraduate program can't compete with Rice solely because it can be more picky since it's a private university. What UT does is incredible considering the anti intellectual political environment of Texas

Our company regularly hires graduate degreed individuals and has had excellent success with UT alumni; however, it just happens that we are in the same town as UT and have lots of applicants from there. We also have Ph.Ds from Rice. We have two employees that did undergrad at Harvard and graduate work at UT.

In any case, as to your question - UT has (and seems to deserve) a strong reputation from its graduate program; however, the strength of an individual's resume (regardless of school) will be more paramount, whether they are just out of school or have some experience under their belt.

For B.S. hires, we have them from all over the country - a lot from UT, but also a lot from aTm, several from Rice, a few from TxTech, one Georgia Tech....I am not sure on many people, it is immaterial once you are working.

I have no idea on the ranking system, but I suspect that Rice is 'dinged' for not having the breadth (and depth) in as many programs as UT - Rice is still primarily an engineering and science school.

US News ranking is not the greatest survey. You may want to read a bit about the rankings are done.

UT is an excellent university, but overall, Rice has a better reputation. Or I should say if you look at percentages of students, Rice has the better reputation. UT is massive in size, and heavily funded by the state, so that is more of an apples to oranges comparison unless you are looking at something akin to a 'per capita' survey. UT certainly gets elite students, but Rice can be more selective with everybody it chooses. Rice would be closer to Harvard.
