If I have a vehicle that I don't wish to renew the registration on, do I need to do anything special to avoid penalties? Or do I just do nothing and not renew? In CA if you don't file what they call "non-operation" then the DMV starts stacking fees on the registration into the hundreds of dollars, and when you go to register the car again there's like a $500 fee for all the time that the registration was expired.

My car's reg expired yesterday but the thing is in pieces, and wont be drive-able for a while. I already removed insurance and don't see any point in renewing the registration on something that doesn't dive but I can't really find a straight answer to my question online.

Thanks

Texas doesn't require registration on inoperable vehicles like California does.

I see plenty of people driving around DFW with registration stickers that expired months ago. The oldest one I saw expired 05/15. I think you'll be fine!

My husband just registered a '73 Mustang he purchased back in 2008 with antique plates. He walked in, told them it's been under restoration and not driven for 8 years, and was given the plates and sticker with absolutely no problem. He did have to complete certain paperwork to ensure it meets the antique classification (he will switch to classic plates soon when the work on the car is finally done), but that was about as onerous as the process got.

I don't think you'll have any problems.

Cool, that's good to hear. Hopefully my car will be out of surgery soon.
Will I have to get it re-inspected at the time of renewal or if it's still within 2 years since the last inspection will that still count?

I have a pickup I don’t drive a lot, and once the sticker expired for a protracted time. When I went for a new sticker they asked if I had been driving it and I told them I had not. There was no problem.
