This thread was made just to get answers....

Now we all know the prominence of M.D.Anderson and all of the hoopla that comes with it. And How large the TMC is and how its the best ever....

My question is kind of simple and I just want to see the explanations that come about.

QUESTION: " If M.D. Anderson is supposed to be the best and trump everything else in Texas then why does
UT Southwestern here in Dallas have almost DOUBLE the endowment as M.D.Anderson?"

And since it has Double the endowment why is it looked at as being inferior to M.D.Anderson when its just as good?

Endowment Information

https://www.google.com/webhp?sourcei...tern+endowment

......just curious!

It's mainly because MD Anderson has continually grown by close to 50% per year for a while now, they spend millions and millions on infrastructure on a scale much larger than UT Southwestern could dream of. MD Anderson isn't ranked #1 in the country and world for cancer research and treatment by accident.

Also keep in mind that UT SW has an academic staff of 3,691 and MD Anderson is well over 20,000. It's hard to even compare the 2 institutions, they aren't even in the same ballpark.

Isn't the focus and purpose of MD Anderson MUCH more narrow than UT SW?

Endowments have nothing to do with care rankings. No metric for hospital systems im aware of puts UT SW over MD Anderson

the goal is to conduct research not to build endowments although endowments can help with that

the reason that MD Anderson is so much more respected is that even though they have a much more narrow focus on cancers in 2014 MD Anderson conducted $794,980,000 in research and development which puts it #21 of all the universities and research hospitals in the USA and that includes large universities that also have large research hospitals attached and again with a much more broad focus than cancers

https://ncsesdata.nsf.gov/herd/2014/...14_DST_19.html

UT Southwestern by contrast conducted $434,627,000 in research and development in 2014 which is #47 in the USA

MD Anderson is also closely affiliated with BOTH the UT Health Science Center Houston (which has a $306,000,000 million dollar endowment itself) and with the Baylor College of Medicine ($1,095,000,000 endowment) and the fact that it works closely with BOTH of those top medical schools makes MD Anderson unique

and the BCM did $496,314,000 in research and development in 2014 which puts it at #40 in the USA and the UT HSC Houston did $233,737,000 in research and development in 2014 which puts it at #89

so it is the fact that MD Anderson has a specialization in cancers specifically and that it is such a research powerhouse in that focused area that makes it so highly respected

and it is the fact that the TMC has many institutions of medicine/health care that deal with research, education, patient care and training and that do so at a very high level along with universities like Rice and Texas A&M and even Cornell (and others) which makes the TMC the medical powerhouse in Texas and one of the main ones in the USA especially considering that they all work very closely together

I don’t get the comparison try: both institutions are a part of the University of Texas system with different mandates, they don’t compete.
