My wife and I are always on the lookout for unique historic places to visit here in Texas when we go out of town on the weekends. We plan to drive around this summer to visit the few old soda fountains, diners, general stores, and department stores that still exist and are open in small Texas towns.
It's sad that some are gone, like Schreiner's department store in Kerrville (closed) and the Ingenhuett General Store in Comfort that burned last year.
We're aware of some in San Antonio, Austin, Galveston, Houston, and the major cities. Wanting to go especially to small towns. They need all the business they can get.
Also, does anyone know if there is a Texas general store that still has hoop cheese by the slice? The only one I know of is the T.C. Lindsey & Co. General Store in Marshall.

I believe there is still a soda fountain in Dublin. It is right next to the Dublin Dr Pepper processing plant. It's been there for many years.

The Grove is just north of me. Yes, it is for sale. They used to host jamborees every Saturday nite or something out there, from what I hear from coworkers. I think it's for sale on ebay for a million, not sure though-havent checked it out.

Seeing photos of The Grove reminds me of Alamo Village at Brackettville, Texas where The Alamo and other films were made. Has a neat museum of John Wayne memorabilia.

There is a soda fountain across the street from the west rusk high school in New London, TX. It is located inside the museum. If you do not know the story, here is a condensed version. March 18, 1937, the school in New London, TX exploded (gas explosion) and 298 people (students and teachers) died. This is what passed the state odorization law. It is why we can now smell if there is a gas leak. For more information, search "new london school explosion" and you can read about it. Very sad. nlse.org has a really good website. Anyway, I have visited the soda fountain, and it is very nice.
