In your opinion, which metro area in Texas would you find the largest concentration of people who have "geeky" hobbies, including computer programming, dungeons and dragons, Magic the Gathering, Anime, etc.? I'm thinking Austin but I'd love to get a second opinion.

I have friends all over Texas who enjoy those hobbies.

My guess is Austin, Dallas/North Texas, and Houston in that order.

Austin first, Dallas second, Houston third. Exactly as the post above says.

I am actually wondering how big of a gap there is between Austin and Dallas/NT now though. Is Austin still king in this regard?

Yes. The Austin (and Boulder) envy in Dallas startup circles is palpable.

Austin was *never* king in this regard. The difference in geek-tolerance/geek-applause between Austin and N. TX is vanishingly small. Both areas are full of geeks now and have been for as long as I can remember.

Dallas is a programming and IT city. There is not the R&D that youd see in Austin, but there are a lot of techies in Dallas.

Dallas - for sure;
I lived in Austin 12 years, but moved to Dallas 2 decades ago to do bigger/better more mature thing$.
It hasn't disappointed. Austin is prolly ok for the younger/broke college student group, but Dallas is where the big boys with the real toys are. There are over 225 thousand IT workers in DFW area - http://www.destinationdfw.com/Dallas...d-Telecom-Hub/
However, these days, everything is going 'online' ; so 'concentration' is no longer a 'physical' thing - in fact I just moved 50 miles north of dt Dallas to 'have it all', and am more connected than ever ; 'fiber to the farm' - yep, thats right, Ive got gigabit fiber to my 40 acre lakeside 'ranchette'.

Dallas actually still has it's monthly open-air computer swapmeet downtown- still called First Saturday Sidewalk Sale - link= Home thats been going on for almost 4 decades straight, although it's no longer as big as it was in the 'heydays'; so big it had to be held outdoors, as sellers would come with uhaul trucks full of stuff, spread over acres and acres. MONTHLY ! I used to (and still do) find complete/working rack-mount servers out there for $5 !!
