Hi guys!

My wife and I have visited Fredericksburg a couple of times and are thinking of retiring to the hill country. While we know that Fredericksburg and the close surrounding area is the hill country, I was wondering what other towns are in the hill country.

We are conservative politically, pretty much keep to ourselves but do like to eat out at least once a week, and our hobby is target shooting, finding a home with a shooting range on the property would be a perfect fit for us!

We're looking in the 350-400k range and obviously we would want some acreage.

Also, how's the water situation in the area?

Cities in The Texas Hill Country

Not 100% in my opinion - I'd include San Angelo & Abilene as the northern and western edges, but close enough.

I disagree with quite a few on that list. I don't remember seeing any hills in Kyle and Buda. Georgetown is fairly flat as well...

Most people refer to "Hill Country" as starting in West Austin, so any of those suburbs north and south of Austin are not really considered hill country.

That list is pretty inaccurate. Most of the towns on I35, you have to go the extreme western edge to see hills, and most of those are not as impressive as further in the hill country. When I think of Hill Country, I think of towns like Kerrville, Comfort, Leakey, Canyon Lake, Fredericksburg, Blanco, Marble Falls, Bandera, Medina, etc. Towns with serious hills all around.

Georgetown, Kyle, and Buda. Sorry, I know they like to claim to be hill country towns but there are no hills there without going quite a ways west out of town. Even Austin you are going to have to go to the western edge of town. Schertz and Seguin. LOL, no. Flat as a pancake.

I would definitely not include those cities unless you are using an extremely large definition of the hill country. The core of the hill country is north and west of San Antonio and West of Austin in a fairly compact area.

Thanks guys! When I looked at the blurbs on the towns on the list, it appeared to me as some of them were pretty flat. I think we are going to concentrate our search in the Bandera-Fredericksburg-Leakey-Kerrville area.

I have an idea!

Why don't you Google "Texas Hill Country" and then select "Maps". You will find maps that show the extent of what is generally considered the Hill Country. Then you can research the various towns in that area.

Anyone who thinks Abilene is in the Hill Country is way off base.

I think you are hitting the mark on hiils, it is much more than just around Austin as one poster claimed. I think the prettiest part of the hill country is west to NW of San Antonio. Part of what makes thie area my favorite, are the live oaks but were fighting some disease issues on those trees 10 years or so ago when I was looking there so inquire about that if you value the trees where you look. Cedar allergies were another issue that had me switch my search

And anybody who actually grew up in the Hill County (not you) would include those towns because the news/sports/ etc comes from there and most of the farming and ranching equipment comes from there, not from Austin or San Antonio.
