Ok Texans, what is a kolache?

this:

or this:

For me it has always been the one on top, but last week I learned that many Texans use to mean the one on bottom.

The bottom one is what you tend to see the most of in Texas, but I believe authentic Czech kolaches are usually made with fruit or other sweets.

Lol--in Texas, they both are. My favorite is filled with boudin! I don't particularly like the smoked sausage ones--those are more of a Pig in a Blanket. . Most places have both the sweet & savory ones.

I think the proper Czech term is something other than our "kolache", or it's at least pronounced differently from how we generally say it.

Thanks, Westerntraveler. Can't rep you again yet. I knew there were different names for them. I guess my favorite is a Kajun kolache, lol!

Second what WesternTraveler says, although I'm not Czech. Kolaches have fruit filling, and "sausage rolls" have meat. Anyone who frequents the Czech Stop in West knows the difference.

I was trying to remember that name. Yes, the Czech places in central Texas sell both, and have them named properly.

Adding, I can't say the second name so I just point when I stop in West!

Thanks Christie. The only reason why I know the difference is because a bandleader was talking about the Czech Stop one time.
