Recent anti-trans bill makes it seem so:

https://abcnews.go.com/US/white-hous...ry?id=83070044

In a Feb. 22 letter, Abbott called gender-transitioning or affirming procedures "child abuse," following an official declaration from state Attorney General Ken Paxton that said the same.

This isn’t anything new? Abbott’s administration has not shifted left at any point in its tenure. When people say Texas is shifting left it’s because

1. Texas cities are voting more blue now. That hasn’t changed

2. Texas as a state is gradually voting less Republican by percentage

There has never been a point in time since the Bush era that Texas shifted left in statewide seats.

Would hardly consider that shifting right. More like Common Sense prevailing.

The big cities are blue the rural areas are red.

This is pretty much true of many other states...including one-party rule states like NY and CA.

^ Yup, even rural/mountain/desert/central valley communities in California are pretty conservative, the difference is Texas rural community #'s are still large in comparison to it's cities.

Texas remains red because the suburbs remain red. If the suburbs were blue along with the core cities, Texas is blue. This is pretty much true in all states tbh.

Greg Abbott was definitely seen as not conservative enough by many Texans before he ended the lockdowns, and it had nothing to do with covid. Around the time DeSantis ended the lockdowns and Abbott quickly followed suit, I have noticed he has been much more conservative/further right/whatever you want to call it. I wonder why this is. Did he have a change of heart? Has he always been this conservative, and he was trying to appeal to more people before? Is he doing this to try to secure re election (keep the conservative base happy)? Who knows. I have definitely noticed this though.

It certainly did have to do with covid. Conservatives were extremely disappointed when Abbott kowtowed to the liberal mayors and issued the mask mandate. Then when he lifted it and tried to play the Liberty loving Conservative hero , Conservatives weren't having any of it. They do not trust him . He is a reactive Conservative, leading from behind not a Proactive Conservative.
It is an election year so he is now trying to flex his Conservative Bonafide's but as long as there are real movement Conservative Govenor's like Desantis and Noem on the scene Abbott will look like John Cornyn compared to Ted Cruz and he will have trouble with Conservatives.

Before covid he was already seen that way by a lot of people but maybe that did make it seen more.

State elections. When Abbott's national aspiration bloom more he'll move more center/Left. He's weak and cut from the same cloth as Mitt Romney, the Bush clan, and McCain.
