I was driving from Kenedy, Texas back to San Antonio on New Year's eve on Hwy 181 and noticed the castle like Karnes County Courthouse up on it's hill in Karnes City, Texas.... so nicely decorated for Christmas.

I looked up the building when I got home and then started to peruse pictures of the other 254 County Courthouses and noticed how beautiful and historic many of them are.

Which is your favorite Texas County courthouse?

Below is a pic of the Karnes County Courthouse built in 1895.

There are 254 county courthouses in Texas, and each of them is unique! Here's a site with photos and historical information from a guy who visited ALL of them: County List (alphabetical) - 254 Texas Courthouses

My favorites are:
Hill County 137 Hill County - 254 Texas Courthouses
Parker County 045 Parker County - 254 Texas Courthouses
Ellis County 030 Ellis County - 254 Texas Courthouses
Caldwell County: 003 Caldwell County - 254 Texas Courthouses

Hopefully the Mason County courthouse will soon be restored to its former glory. 116 Mason County - 254 Texas Courthouses

Oh wow, that's a shame about the Mason County Courthouse , I hadn't heard about that. It was such a beautiful building.

The Mason County Courthouse was burned down in January 2021 by a man angry about an upcoming child custody case, according to court docs.

Good thread OP! I love old County Courthouses.

Ellis County’s is beautiful!
I like Tarrant County’s as well. I like how it is still very much apart of the city skyline.

The Old Red Courthouse in Dallas is my favorite. (Yeah, it sounds like I’m a homer lol) Especially, after it was resorted a few years ago. Beautiful Red Sandstone building.

Check out downtown Lockhart in the hilarious movie - WAITING FOR GUFFMAN - It is the fictional town of Blaine, Missouri in the movie. I could watch this over and over and over. (Sorry for the rabbit trail.)

Forgot to mention Bexar County. The sandstone reminds me of Old Red.

Hill and Parker County are almost identical to Hood County courthouse. Parker is probably my favorite of the three.

Presidio County courthouse is my favorite.

Honorable mention to Fannin County.

It is a pretty building, but I have too many bad memories from the Bexar County Court building from my youth.

County courthouses in Texas are akin to catholic churches in small Mexican towns, not that they look the alike but both many times are historical central fixture in many smaller communities.

Interesting that you should notice that, it could be that the original constitution for the State of of Coahuila an Texas in 1827 contained these two Articles in its Preliminary Provisions for Coahuilatexanos. https://tarlton.law.utexas.edu/const...ary-provisions

ART. 9. The Roman Catholic Apostolic Religion shall be the religion of the state. The state protects it by wise and just laws, and prohibits the exercise of any other.

ART. 10. The state shall regluate and pay all expense that should be necessary for the preservation of religious worship, agreeably to the concordates the nation should ratify with the Apostolic See, and to the laws that shall be prescribed on the exercise of the patronato throughout the republic.

I'm pretty fond of this one, because of its simple lines, local stone, and the way it and the Main Plaza are lit up at Christmas: 037 Comal County - 254 Texas Courthouses
