Our first dentist was actually an American dentist who practices in Mexico.

Last year during our last trip, I also visited an optician for an eye exam and a new set of invisible-line bifocals for $120. The same exam and eyeglasses at Walmart eight years ago cost me $450.

If you decide to go, it helps to know a little Spanish pero no necesario.
Would you have the information on the medical people you encountered in Mexico that you would recommend? I am particularly interested in dental and eyeglass services.

My wife got all her orthodonic work done in Nuevo Progresso, Tamaulipas (near Weslaco, TX). It cost about $3,000 including retainers. In the U.S., the estimate was 7,500 without. So probably 8,000. Her ortho's name is Dr. Bernardo Rodriguez. His reputation is stellar and his clientele is mostly wealthier residents of the Rio Grande Valley (the U.S. side) that could easily afford to patronize a U.S. dentist. Also, anybody he recommends or refers is a good general dentist. My wife has told me right now his price has probably gone up due to his popularity.

I don't know about having other procedures done in Mexico, but let's be honest. Denistry is not heart surgery. As for news reports, you only hear about the few that are injured or have a bad experience as opposed to the thousands that have no issues.

dentistry can have serious complications--from bad anaesthetic, lack of sterile instruments/conditions, improper technique, poor pain management--
don't downplay dental work--an infection in your mouth is very near the brain--it is serious business--
not to say that Mexican dentists are not qualified--many US dentists have less than stellar results with the same issues...
