Austin by far. Not even close. I remember when Austin was a small college(y) town, unassuming, kind of secret in the glory days of the 70s and 80s. It was awsome. Now its has lost that. Someone mentioned how Austin is basically California Diaspora. Very true. Sad but true.

Now of all the places in Texas that I can say still have that old Austin like vibe it would be Denton. Denton is holding it down and has been for a loooong time.

Denton?

One of the worst areas in the big four north Texas counties in my opinion.
I could live in Collin, Tarrant or Dallas, but Denton and the rest? Forget about it.

Back in high school I went to a music camp in Denton one summer. Ended up staying on the Texas Women's University campus. Didn't seem like a terrible place in my opinion.

Did you actually spend time in Downtown Denton or Fry Street?

Denton is a wasteland. Nothing pretty about the place. Go there for college (if you have to) then move ASAP.

Yes, my best friend's sister went to school there and we would go spend weekends. Denton and its County is easily my least favorite of the major counties in North Texas

Certain areas of Denton County by the lakes are nice, but the rest is blah. I think the reconstruction of I-35 through there will help the area a lot. Right now the interstate is narrow and ugly.

UHH Denton is not about the "scenery" in a traditional sense. Its not about the land or the outdoors there. So try again. I can explain but let me see if you all know whats up beyond "scenery". HAHA.

Denton doesn't offer much outside of the college lifestyle. Their mall is worse than Tyler's. It has a lackluster, chain ridden restaurant row like Tyler & its nightlife scene isn't much better. Its not a pretty town either. Its only saving grace is being 45-60 minutes away (without traffic) from Dallas.

Beyond college lifestyle? Nope wrong on that account. The mall is horrible but most malls are. If you are into malls Denton is not for you. That is not what Denton is about.

" Its not a pretty town either." That is subjective.

" Its only saving grace is being 45-60 minutes away (without traffic) from Dallas."

some people say its far enough away from Dallas (to get away from all that plastic) and thats a good thing!

So far I havent heard anyone speak about what makes Denton unique. The negative comments here about Denton fit into exactly what makes Denton Denton.

Its in the goldie locks zone. Not too hot (people talk smack about it and it is unassuming) and not too cold (it has received numerous accolades in press for a small town).

I remember Austin in the late 70s and 80s. The negative stuff people said about Austin back in that day are some of the same stuff they are saying now about Denton.
