San Antonio

San Antonio prides itself on perserving their historic buildings. It has a very vibrant streetscape and the primary focus in downtown is the human scale, which is why a city of over 1.3 million people has a skyline fit for a city much smaller. But with landmarks such as The Alamo and the Riverwalk, skyscrapers aren't built as much or the same way you would see it in Houston or Dallas.

Next Month: Dallas

I think its bad for a city that size, same goes with Phoenix. San Antonio being in the top ten with most populations and a city like Top 25 has a much better skyline.

I rated San Antonio's skyline as good. If the Tower of the Americas wasn't there, I would rate it as average. Like you said above, SA is more known for it's street level activity downtown than its skyline. Even though downtown SA doesn't have the tall impressive towers found in some other cities of it's size, I do like the large number of historic buildings that have been preserved. One of my favorites is the Tower Life buildling, it looks great lit up at night (on the crown).

It gets a "good" from me...mainly because despite it's size, it fits the bill. San Antonio is a historical city with a unique multicultural heritage and it's visual style reflects that pretty well. I'd give it a 4 out of 5. It makes up for what it lacks in size and height by having tons of character and overall uniqueness.

Good answer, the office of historic preservation takes a hard look at every old building downtown before it can be razed. They would prefer an old building be restored then a new glass tower in it's place, many of the residents would agree. The height of a new building is also scrutinized for it's proximity to The Riverwalk and the shading effect it will have on the vegetation on The Riverwalk.

I used to think it was "good," but I think it needs to take the next step up. More residential buildings are needed, and I believe the newest commercial building there dates from 1985. Hotels are ok, but I'd like a diversity of structures. I picked "average," though the historic preservation may be above average.

It is?

I like the 4th shot better since it makes the skyline look wider.... but it's not an updated pic.
