I am thinking of Harlingen, TX VA because I go to the VA for medical because I'm a vet and retire and am 65. I can't spend over $150K for a house so I want to keep as close to Harlingen, TX VA say 30 miles so I'm wondering would that area be a good place to retire?

Aren't there other VA facilities in Texas? My brother in central east Texas uses one in Houston.

$150 will buy a really nice home around the Lubbock area. I believe even Lubbock has a Veterans Center. I'm a Vet in my 60s but have never used the VA.

I've only been to Harlingen once or possibly twice but I believe knowing Spanish would be helpful if you planned to live down there.

Anyway, good luck.

Yes quite a few and Houston would be worse than Phoenix because I'm tying to get out of the big metro areas. Also Lubbock is a dust bowl. I had a cousin live there and it's worse than Phoenix for dust. also I'm trying to get out of the desert type of area. I look at Harlingen demographics and they say about 1.47% are Hispanic however twice as many people speak Spanish over English, now how do the people that write these demographics figure that?

Demographics are so misleading you need to do an extra hour of research to figure them out.

I don't know who came up with that info. Harlingen is about 80% Hispanic--it has the largest Anglo population in the RGV, though. If that's an issue, perhaps you should look elsewhere. Maybe the Piney Woods of East Texas would be more to your liking. It's consistently greener (& whiter) than the Valley.

Just don't set yourself up to have to use the Bonham VA clinic. I've heard way too many horror stories...

Take a look at the Temple, Tx VA, about an hour north of Austin, on I-35. Temple is a fairly nice town growing into a city. Fort Hood is about twenty miles to the west.

You can get plenty of house for 150k in the Temple area.

Good luck
