I've never owned a car before and want too. I want a car that is somewhat decent(maybe 2005 on)for cheap..and also, how much should I expect to have to pay per year for insurance/repairs, etc?

Do you have a Ontario driver's license ? If you are a newly licensed driver, with a G2, your insurance costs are going to be high, even with a 10 year old car, due to your lack of driving experience in Ontario. Insurance costs are based on "your past driving record ". Plus where you live, and how far you drive each day. That could work out to more than $3000 a year, just for basic level insurance coverage.

I would suggest that you DO NOT buy a car. Instead join a rent a car program, like ZIP cars, where you only pay by the hour, for occasional use. Once you have a membership card, you can go to a local parking lot, and use your card to open the lock box, get the key and drive the car as needed. You pay for the time that you have it. Charges include insurance, you have to fill up the gas tank, before you return it to the parking spot. By doing this you avoid annual costs that will run to more than 4,000k for insurance, repairs, and plates, over and above the monthly costs of paying for the car that you bought. And don't forget about the question, "Where do I park my car " ?

Its the smart way to have access to a car, but only pay for the time that YOU use it. Buy a TTC monthly pass.

I've had my G2 since 2010 and have driven all the way to florida and back twice. If I get my G3 how cheap will the insurance be compared to G2? I've grown tired of the TTC because it takes too long to get to places and it makes me feel like I'm trapped in whatever single area I decide to go. I don't know if the zip cars would be worth it if you need it for more than one hour? They list the cheapest at $12.50 so wouldn't a rental be cheaper in a lot of cases? How much do you think i would have to pay on average per year for insurance, repairs, license fees, etc?

Car insurance is based on a number of factors. Your driving record, the age of the car, how expensive it is to repair after an accident, how frequently they are stolen, how far you drive per month, and the minimum protection ( liability coverage ) required by law in Ontario. An average would be at least 200 a month, for a 10 year old car, with no collision coverage, just liability of one million dollars per incident. Add to that the cost of paying for the car, and gas and repairs, and parking.

Renting a car by the day is more costly than using a zip car, by the hour. My step son uses a zip car, for specific trips, that he plans for ahead of time. Otherwise he is a bike rider all year long. He's an artist, and he is careful with his money, as he doesn't make that much of it.

I can't help you with your objection to the TTC. It is by far the cheapest way to travel in Toronto, except walking, or riding a pedal bike.

cheapest compared with driving, like anywhere else, but incredibly unreliable, outdated and SLOW (unless you only take the subway).

I'd suggest to the OP, avoid TTC at all cost. If you can afford a car, get a car unless you live right downtown and don't plan to go outside of it often.

By the way, at $134 a month, TTC is more expensive than almost every single city I know of, including New York, London and Paris.

$200 a month for insurance? I live in Hamilton and only pay $90 for full coverage. If you're looking for a used car look outside of TO, I bought in the Cambridge area and saved over a thousand from GTA prices. Every used car is different.
