Based on the above, what are your opinions on what the next Corolla should do for improvement?
I think they first need to catch up on fuel economy. Drop in some extra gears in the transmission would be a good place to start. It's not a performance car and it's reputation as dull is practically set in stone. How many here remember a performance version Corolla that actually had some performance for it's time? Volume is their bread and butter so they should not bother with trying to make it a performance sedan. But common, their competition has both better fuel economy AND better acceleration numbers. Toyota needs to step up cause they're getting left behind.
They should add a V6 to it and give it 5 speeds instead of 4. I rented one in Alaska and got 39mpg on a regular basis. It should be sportier and better handling.

Corolla hadn't had a real sport model since the late 1980s and even then it wasn't a V6. Perhaps with more gears or with a manual, the Camry base engine would provide better performance than it did before.
We own a 2010 Carolla S and love it. We got the only one that had a 5 speed manual. Test drove both the auto and the manual and while neither one of them are speed demons the 5 speed sure is more fun to drive.
What happened to the Corolla SR5 Coupe's from the late 80's/early 90's, I used to love them. Drove a few and at the time was faster than the 89 Corolla I had, granted mine was a carburetor engine.
I am feeling my age now.

I'd agree with your suggestions. The most pressing issue is fuel economy. They need to get the Corolla up to 40 MPG highway to be competitive, more if they want to lead the class and do it without relying on cheats like "fuel efficient" tires.
The Corolla has never been a sporty car and it was never intended to be. The whole cult status of the rear drive AE86 models was something that was dreamed up by drifters. Toyota could care less about how this car performs.
The only area I would make any changes to the car would be for fuel economy and braking. I don't see why they can't make the Corolla get 40+MPG on the HWY. My old GF had a 2000 Corolla and it got 33 mpg and only had a 3 speed auto with no OD. Should it be faster... No. Should it handle better. Sure it should but only if they can do it without hurting the way the car rides or without increasing the cost.
The Corolla is the most reliable car ever made and it still out sells all other small cars on the market. If it isn't broke don't fix it.
Putting a 6 cylinder engine is just dumb. The Corolla is a compact car with a bias towards economy. If Toyota wants to do something for performance, they should build a better 4 cylinders. A 1.8L turbo or something like that makes much more sense than a V6.
I thni if I had those sales figures i would look before jumping especailly in styling at who buys them.
