Really! If so then why so many people around the world still drive Mercedes? Go and check cabs in Europe.
Different mindset and a different class of vehicle. No one in the US would use a $50K vehicle for an every day taxi here. The cheaper Benz aren't available in the US .
Most cabbies are independent contractors. The driver owns the car and probably uses it as his personal vehicle as well. Seems to make sense that many would buy a quality car like the Camry since they are also using it as their personal car.
Or they could buy a quality car like a Crown Vic, Mercury Grand Marquis or Lincoln Town Car which were known to have longevity.
Toyota Camry is a reliable vehicle. Toyota's engines and transmissions are very reliable. My concern would be how well the suspension holds up, and the vehicle itself. A full framed crown victoria can hop curbs way better than a front wheel drive car.
The ones that I saw all over were E class and S class and BMW 5-ser.
Yes but they are available in somewhat stripped way in Europe that they don't sell here. Or they used to be. I rode in an E-class cab once in the Netherlands. What I remember most was the stick shift, although I believe there were other facets of the interior that were oriented towards the fleet use (lower cost, easier to maintain), stuff like probably vinyl seats, that sort of thing. Plus, they have different (lower cost, smaller) engine options that aren't available here.

I'm not sure about now but not so long ago those cars were available in Europe with steel wheels, no radio, manual transmissions in some models that weren't available in the US, lower grade upholstery, and other down-scale versions the US never saw.
