I've noticed over the years a lot of 70s Toyota Corollas with some form of the Purto Rican flag on it weather a license plate in the front, or something dangling from the rear view mirror. Is there some special connection between them and these cars, some kind of back story????

So we all know that Christopher Columbus "discovered" Puerto Rico during one of his voyages.

But a little known fact is that the first person from Columbus's crew to step onto the island was not Columbus himself. It was a sailor named Fernando Corollo. It's a fact that not many people outside of Puerto Rico know.

To this day, Puerto Riccans honor Fernando's name by buying Toyota Corollas.

In the cities of Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton in the Lehigh Valley you have to watch out for riced out garbage Hondas as their car of choice.

I call the cars garbage because the inevitable dents, rust, mismatched and unpainted aftermarket effects kits and cut springs that lower the car in a very unsafe way that causes me to not only call the cars garbage but to also stay clear of them as well for obvious reasons.

Now it seems to be more Hyundais so maybe the Toyotas seem to be falling out of favor. I don't think you can do much with a Hyundai after market to rice it up. Toyotas were the car of choice back in the 90s and we had a catch phrase of " Toy OTAAH Co ROLAAH" because they were so common here in SE Pa. Tinted windows, garish trim, dorky looking rims, you name it. One good thing about Pa winters and potholes, they soon make low profile tires and fancy rims pointless.
I'm seeing young white guys with old muscle cars, usually near wrecks, so they seem to be coming back. They must literally be dragging them out of old fields or junk yards.

You are right. Nowdays they have moved on to other cars, but when i was first into driving, and corollas were rwd, bang for buck they were a great little car with lots of potential to fix up. I had a few my self. If you go to puerto rico you will still see them racing and fixing up the old ones (and the volkys).

Yea their culture is just different.

I see a lot of the old Datsun 510s as well as corollas and RX7s.

I loooooove those Datsuns.

Maybe you should ask yourself this first... Why do white Americans always seem to be driving Mustangs and Camaros?

Its the same question. Thats what we love to work on and build, the aftermarket field for those cars is probably the biggest in the world.

So there you go.

When you have limited resources, youll take whatever you can get... Those cars are perfect candidates for little street cars.

I still see a lot of Corollas with the Puerto Rican flag, etc. on it. But hey, to be honest, I say, great choice on their part, they are probably the most durable cars ever made, take it from someone who's had 2 of them in his lifetime with over 200K miles on both.

It's called Puerto Rican Pride and it's limited to Corollas.
