Most consumer organisations don't recommend the extra insurance from rental companies. They are expensive and as said on this thread before, your CC or insurer will cover you.

I always complete any written inspection...putting x's and dashes everywhere....even if there isn't anything wrong with an area....

Always decline insurance. At least i do. Otherwise you are throwing your money away. I returned a car with a dent once and never heard anything about it.

I appreciate the advice to buy/not buy insurance, but that really wasn't my question. My question WAS re: how hard it was to fight a bill from Hertz for damage when you're not covered by their policy.... and apparently the answer is "not hard at all, just call and deny, deny, deny"
