Has anyone actually seen a fare decrease on Tuesdays? I've booked a lot of flights and never found that one to be true!
We bring our iPhones on all international trips and keep it an airplane mode. Then, we find wifi and use Skype to make calls back home or if we want to make restaurant reservations/book excursions. Smartphones are definitely great for travel!
I think the best thing to do is to be loyal to one airline. Because of our loyalty to Delta, we have gotten many free flights last year. Places like Costa Rica, Turks and Caicos and several trips to NYC, many of them bumped to first class...it really pays to be loyal!
#8 has some truth. We booked a hotel in Chicago the week after the usual Spring Break time and it was $25/night less! Woohoo!
With Priceline, it could have been 40% less! We rarely pay more than $80/night for a hotel room, and I'm talking some nice places not 2 or 3 star hotels. Priceline rocks!

I used AA miles for it (plus used the miles for the tours) but it would have been around $90/night if I had paid.
Definitely traveling during the off season--even a week before or after shoulder or high season starts will save $$$--I do that a lot!
The others, I've tried a lot of them and have never had luck with getting a deal. In fact the Biltmore Bohemian in Ashville wouldn't budge on the room rate, even at 6:00 pm with a 25% occupancy rate in the off-season. I went two blocks up the road to the Residence Inn who not only were happy to give me a discount, but also a free upgrade to a two bedroom.
I'm not a fan of Priceline, I prefer to have a lot more control over where I stay. And Priceline 4 stars are often barely 3 stars in the real world.
If you know how to use the site, you do have control over where you stay. We can pinpoint our hotel almost all the time when used in conjunction with Better Bidding. We have never had an issue with hotels on Priceline and have gotten some awesome properties. Kimpton hotels participate in many cities, and those are some of the nicest hotels. I guess if you're a hotel snob, it won't work, but we are very happy with the properties we've gotten and will continue to use them on our travels.
Edited to add, I posted this in another thread but here are just a few examples of hotels we've gotten on PL. We are not hotel snobs, so these were good enough for us!
Aruba-Marriott Stellaris Resort for $70/night during peak travel season. Others in the hotel paid $250+ for the same room. We had a balcony, a huge room with the one bed we requested, and an ocean view.
NYC-W in Union Square for $60/night. Cannot even come close to that by doing it on your own.
Miami-National Hotel, right on Collins for $50/night.
San Francisco-Used PL for both our trips. Got the Palomar SF for $70/night last May, and Le Meridien for $90/night over this past Labor Day weekend.
Chicago-Fairmont Chicago-$70/night.
San Diego, just before moving here, we got the Hilton in Mission Bay for $50/night.
A good many fare sales start on Tuesdays. Yesterday alone, I received notification for another Southwest and an Air Tran sale. Of course, for the Southwest sale, it was to replace an expiring sale.
I thought that a lot of the recommendations were hardly exciting or anything special that most travelers would not already know. And there were very few references to low cost providers like Priceline, Southwest, etc.
