Don't get me wrong, I love Hawaii but it's a wee bit too pricey for me to go this year. Anyone know of a nice cheaper alternative, a place with similar vibes along the lines of Oahu that won't bankrupt me? I'm planning to go somewhere sometime around Christmas.

So you're in Colorado?
Maybe you could get a good airfare to go down to the Florida Keys.
When we were living in Denver, cheap Florida airfares did occasionally show up.
Not sure about Christmastime, though.

Anything that would truly replicate Hawaii is goign to be as expensive if not more expensive than hawaii. Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia adn a bunch of other islands in teh south paciifc are very expensive.

Not really a hawaii experience but I love Jamaica and you can get some really good deals. Its a third world country so probably nothing like hawaii in that sense but tehre's tons of outdoor activities, waterfalls, natural springs, mountains, etc.

Mexico or Belize

BTW... I can't stand HI, I hope you have a better experience.

For a whole 'nuther option... consider the South Pacific (not cheaper but FAR superior). Some other great 'island' resorts in Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Try doing Hawaii on a budget. Go with a hostel instead of hotel maybe?

An above poster mentioned Belize. My friend went there and really liked.

Agree on both counts.
I *loved* off-the-beaten-path Hawaii, and it is not impossible to do it a bit more cheaply, but getting to most places from Denver is not always the easiest accomplishment.

I have the perfect place- more beautiful than any of the Hawaiian islands....but like the other posters have said, it's going to be more expensive. Hawaii is actually pretty cheap compared to alot of places.

A cruise would be your best bet. Carnival has cruises for less than a hundred bucks a day and that includes your lodging and meals...and entertainment.

I'd agree with others on Belize. They speak English, money pegged 2/1 to US dollar, much cheaper than Hawaii, lots of tourist things to do including some of the best snorkeling/diving around, and only a little over three hours from Houston airport.

Do the surf and turf.... a few days on the beach like Caye Caulker then a few days inland at San Ignacio. You can also jump into Guatemala to see Tikal Mayan Ruins on a day trip from SI.

You'll have to share your budget Hawaii stories. One day I want to fly out there, see Pearl Harbor, eat at a hot dog place I saw on No Reservations and then take the roads less traveled from there.
