Anyone here flown standby on AirTran before? I'm trying to get an earlier flight, but was not sure how much of a pain it would be.

Do I have to pay a fee to move up to the earlier flight? How big of a hassle is it?

These might be elementary questions, but can't find too much enlightening info on flying standby on AirTran.

I've done earlier flight on AirTran a bunch of times, Officialy they change a fee ($50 I think) I've never paid it. Its actually to the airlines benefit to get rid of you early (Seats are perishable once the plane leave they can't make any money on it, but if there is an empty seat and they fill it with a early bird it allow them to re-sell your later seat, or handle a overbooking on that flight by only if they get rid of you early). Allot of it is up to the mode of the gate agent, Also when they tell you it will be $50, just tell them never mind I'll take the later flight, They will then cave and put you on the earlier flight,

opps... I got Delta & Airtran's Policy reversed:

Here's Airtrans:

Changes at the Airport on Day of Travel

Customers have two options for changing to a flight other than their reserved flight at the airport on the day of travel. Based on space availability, customers may reserve a confirmed seat on an earlier flight to the same destination for $25 per person per segment. Or, customers have the option to standby for another flight to the same destination at no charge. These options are only available at the airport on the day of travel.
