In the latest of an uncountable multitude of crimes victimizing tourists, a gang of armed masked Mexican men raped 6 women staying at a tourist resort in Acapulco.
Actually they were NOT at a tourist resort. They had rented a house outside the main resorts area. Other published reports have alleged that the victims had bought drugs from the attackers a day previous.

Actually it really doesn't matter. You can become a victim south of the border for any reason or in any circumstance. If you are a tourist you are a mark. There are far more victims you never hear about than the ones you do. Anyone with any familiarity with the Justice system in Mexico knows that if you go to authorities after being victimized, you are asking to be victimized twice.
I stayed in Cancun in November of 2011. I experienced no trouble whatsoever. What was a bit unnerving was my fiancee and I had never been to Mexico. No one told us about all of the military personnel who would be walking around Cancun. It just made me feel uneasy walking to La Isla Mall with guys standing by trees with assault rifles. I know there trying to protect everyone. Now I know what to expect.

It makes a huge difference, IMO. You can find trouble anywhere. I'm not blaming the victims, but saying it helps to have your wits about you wherever you are. For God's sake, don't go to Mexico and buy illegal drugs, it should be a no brainer.
The Florida Keys is where ya all need to go They are the closet thing to a tropical paradise and you are still within the lower 48.
True but awful expensive....your $$$ goes much further in Mexico and some of the Caribbean Islands.
Trying to book a winter vacation in Key West costs a kings ransom

True...was in Cabo a few years ago and had no issues

Cabo is an exception, it is practically a walled off amusement park with cops on every corner to help you cross the road. Whoever runs Cabo does a good job of protecting tourists, but then again without the tourists Cabo has nothing. Its geographic location makes it an ideal location to monitor who comes and goes.
Other resort cities are having major problems. Puero Vallarta is no longer even a stop for cruise ships.
The Federalies are always a problem and between them and the drug gangs the majority of Mexico is a bad incident waiting to happen.
The thing that is really confusing though is why tourists would put themselves at risk to go to Mexico when it has so little to offer.
In the past at least you could find some good deals, but that is really no longer the case. For the most part it is just as expensive as the US, and often less quality.
