So, we're moving cross-country via plane (yes, I know this isn't the moving forum) and I'm honestly contemplating putting my trusty skillet and some cooking utensils in my checked baggage. I'm shipping the other cooking stuff of course but I want to have something to cook with when we get there. Is that just too strange? It got me thinking about what other weird stuff people send through checked baggage when traveling since carry-ons have tons more restrictions.
What about you? What's the weirdest thing you've checked in baggage?
A 2 ft 2" tall cathedral amythest...bought it at a street fair in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I packed it on the angle in a small suitcase with dirty clothes wrapped around it, and strolled to Security at GRU, the X-Ray lady wanted to 'see it', she did, as did a few other security types. They smiled and waved the bag and me through. Flew back to JFK, took it home, and surprised my wife who has an extensive rock and mineral collection. Maybe it was just a lucky day.

I've checked car parts, stand fans, desk fan, computer moniter, flat screen tv, home baked cookies, roasted turkey breast, roast beef, fax machine, cast iron skillet, bottles of rum, 5lbs of jerk pork.....I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can remember off the top of my head. (in all the years I've traveled, and all the things I've checked, I've never been robbed)
A wireless access point for networking, routers, switches, firewalls, WAN acceleration units, as I sometimes carry my demo gear on my flights. Never had a hard time, though.
I brought a machete back from the rainforest. It's basically a 2-foot sword. I never expected to be "ok" to bring it in my luggage, but they didn't say nothing.
On the other hand, I had to throw away a pair of scissors from a little grooming/shaving kit or I was gonna miss my flight from the TSA interrogators.
I had several big pieces of desert roses from Algeria and Tunis. (beautiful, flower-like crystalline forms)
This is one of the smallest pieces (not a great pix, sorry!)
