I've had a whole row to myself on a business trip to China back in 2012 and numerous times from DC to Houston (usually through DCA, not too often from IAD).

Also just had one last week on a late flight from Houston to BWI, all these flights were on United.

I wonder how many things I've done in my life that seemed perfectly normal and innocuous to me and then someone near me went home afterwards and posted online about how rude or perplexing my behavior was. No that it matters, it just makes you wonder...

I fly a lot and if someone told me to move from my seat I'd tell them to kiss my ass. They are more than welcome to move from their seat if they choose, but I CHOSE my seat, and I paid for my seat, so I'm going to sit in it.

Just last week, I was surprised to have the attendant announce that the plane was not full and we were free to move if we chose to have more space.
More surprising because it was a Florida-headed -north no-rush mid-morning flight.
Maybe the guy in the op was one of those people that thinks they have to stay where they were assigned or maybe he was 'close friends' with the window seated one.....or hoped to be

One time when I flew from Houston to Lake Charles, LA, the plane only had maybe 10 people on it. It was a small plane, 2 seats on one side and single seats on the other side. Flight attendant told us to sit anywhere we please. We were in the air for less than 1 hour.
