We've had the highest and the lowest. Now -- What is your target price you are willing to pay for a hotel room --that gives you the amenities and comfort you want, and is within your budget?
In the USA, I consider $40 borderline, but usually wind up in the 40s, especially with the punitive taxes that are added (people who pay that special tax don't get to vote on it, so is taxation without representation.) I don't like to go much above that. I'd probably aim for $40-50 in Europe, too, but somewhat less in eastern Europe. In the third world, I try to find something near $10, but an occasional $20 would be tolerable.
TOTALLY dependent on where I am. I look at the range for the location I want, then bordering locations. I try to select something near the bottom of that range, and rarely go above mid-range. I don't need all the fancy fluff and butt licking at the high end hotels.
But pre-setting a maximum without knowing the market rates for a specific definition is impossible, IMHO.
Sometimes, you don't have much choice. For example, if you're in the middle of Manhattan, don't expect to find any hotel room for $40. The other hand, no one wants to spend money they don't have to spend.
Depends where I am. Some places it is $120. Other places it is $80. Where I currently live any motel going for $40 is rather shady looking with a parking lot full of broke down cars.
The best sleep I have ever had was actually in a dorm in Cairo. The room was air conditioned with 4 extremely comfortable double beds with excellent comforters and nice sheets. At most there was only two other people in the room with me, whom were very quiet and respectful. I think I paid the equivelant of 5-6 CAD/night.
Otherwise, between 10-15 CAD is the aim for anywhere outside my home. Whether that is a private room, dorm, mattress, floor I couldn't care less. As long as it's clean and safe.
It depends on where I am. In a major city or very expensive area like the Napa Valley, $250. I expect higher weekend rates in resort areas and higher weeknight rates in the cities. Along an Interstate for the night, $100 or so regardless of the day of the week.
Depends on where I am... If I'm on a road trip with my wife and we spend the night somewhere off of I-95 or I-85, I'm generally expecting to pay between $70 and $80 a night for a basic no frills hotel with free wifi and a free hot breakfast (i.e. Fairfield Inn). When I've traveled for work, the room allowance was around $120 which gets you into a mid-level hotel like a Courtyard or Hilton Garden Inn. If I'm staying in a hotel downtown (Charlotte Marriott Downtown) or at a nice hotel for a special occassion (i.e. Gaylord Resort at the National Harbor), I expect to pay around $200 per night.
