The Transportation Security Administration said Sunday that security screeners at overseas airports may ask U.S.-bound passengers to turn on their electronic devices to prove they work and aren't explosive devices.
They won't allow devices without power on board planes. The traveler may then undergo additional screening.
Okay, if you're on a 14-hour flight from Auckland to, say, LAX and your phone runs out of battery power during the flight and you have a layover presumably airports like LAX are going to provide charging stations all over the airport for passengers to ensure they don't fall foul of this ruling? Assuming of course you have enough time between changing flights, finding your gate, etc to recharge your phone as well.

US bound overseas passengers. US airports like LAX won't be checking.
This is stupid.. The mere fact of turning a device on and it be a bomb set to go off when you turn the device on will undoubtedly cause harm...
Having worked for various "agencies" within the government I have seen a few things that no one ever checks that are bombs... How about a pack of gum, shoelaces, sunglasses....
This along with the no more than 3 ounces of liquid is bull....It takes a hell of a lot less than 3 ounces of T4 to do a great deal of damage... And yes I said T4 NOT C4.... Big difference...
Also what about virucal bombs.. Biologicals that are made from viruses that can detonate and spread the virus everywhere... They can be in all types of normal things....

Transferring flights enroute and once you reach USA WILL be a problem.
After 20+ yrs of weekly international flights... I can't count the times my laptop has been DOA during international flights, (Usually due to various MS bugs / company security software that seems to like to wake up and run your batteries dead while traveling.)
