Say if you live in the Eastern US and you fly over to Europe or the Middle East so you're 5-7 hours, does that really mess you up? Or can you roll with it right off the bat? How many hours difference before you need a day or so to adjust and fall asleep and wake up properly? Have you noticed that going either forward or backwards affects you differently?
If I fly from Toronto to Europe, especially if it's an overnight, it has basically no influence on me. It just seems like a long night. When I flew to New Delhi, India, also from Toronto, I think the excitement had me exploring straight out of the airport but later that day I took a massive nap which messed me up for one or two nights after. That was 9.5 hours difference from home.
Not really. I don't sleep during the flight. When arrived, I take a "stay awake" pill, and go at a normal time (for that time zone) to bed. The next day I am OK.
I am the same. Every time I fly to Europe, usually overnight, I feel fine after arriving and can spend the entire day visiting different places.
But in the case of Asia, I am usually very sleepy towards the end of the day (such as 4 or 5 pm) and have to go to bed much earlier than normal (8 pm for example instead of 11pm).
Easiest way for me to adjust is to stay awake during the day where ever I'm at, even if it means being awake for a full 24 hours... probably not good health wise but does the trick for me.

I've only done it a few times in my life, and I was completely exhausted from it. I flew from the East Coast to Tokyo on one trip. The other from NYC to Frankfurt, and then a 2 hour drive to where I was going. I slept for hours when I got to both destinations. Thankfully its not something I have to do in life. I worked for Delta Airlines and it always amazed me, that flight crews could handle all this jet lag. Perhaps they get use to it.
