Hi,

Looking to see if anyone has any recommendations/advice on visiting the Rhine. Any must sees and any tours you recommend? Is it possible to spend only 2-3 days there? Thanks in advance!

Castles, Fortresses and Palaces on the Rhine river in Germany

If you have time I would check out the Mosel too. Look at Castles, every thing from preserved ones with museums as such to towers and ruines you can climb around on. Drink lots of wine, eat...

We would stay at Koblenz, just south of Bonn and use that as a convenient starting off point for exploring a number of nice castles and a river tour.

The area between Koblenz and Mainz is probably the most scenic area of the river. I would probably start with one of the cruise ships that tour this area of the river. They are reasonable priced and provide some great views.

Also, if you are interested, you can stay in one of the castles. I stayed in Castle Gutenfels a few years ago. It dates from the 1200's and sits above the town of Kaub, with a great view of Pfalzgrafenstein Castle on the river below. If you have watched the Ruxi Maxa or Rick Steves shows on this area, they both include shots of these castles in their shows.

Someday, I hope to take one of the longer river cruises that run from Amsterdam to Basel.

Stay one night in the castle of your choice. Take a ferry DOWNstream, the flow is fast and upstream trips are better done by train. I literally saw a man walking his dog pass our ferry. There are ferries that are included on a German rail pass. Utilize them.

My parents did a Viking Cruise of the Rhine, and really enjoyed it. But I'm fairly certain it was about a week long.

No kidding! I'd love to stay in a castle sometime.

MyTarge, the view from up top is breathtaking. Thanks for sharing your photos.
