Growing up in Virginia I like so many others were listeners to Buffalo's WKBW 1520. At the time I had this vision of Buffalo as being a rather ugly snowy depressing dangerous city..well WKBW kinda did made it sound that way on the radio back then. This was back in the 70s and 80s.
1994 our company had wanted to send to send someone to Buffalo for a conference but because it was in well Buffalo nobody had wanted to go there so I offered to go. I guess it was my "KB" memories that did it for me but I wasn't expecting much.
I was a shocked at Buffalo when I got there and those old WKBW memories had came rolling back. Longtime KB morning guy Danny Nevereth was still on the radio at the time ( WHTT-FM 104 ), Irv Weinstein who I can remember on KB radio was still on WKBW channel 7 "topping" tonight's Eyewitness News. The stores that I can remember hearing ads on "KB" like FWS Furniture, Tops Markets, AM&As department stores were still there. That giant Woolworths in downtown Buffalo was so cool. Amusement parks like Darien Lake and Martins Fantasy Island, the falls nearby and CANADA !! Even saw singer Michael Bolton playing baseball at the Bisons stadium for some charity. Went to my first Wegmans when I was in Buffalo. Cool !!!
Granted this was 21 years ago and I am sure, no wait I know that Buffalo has changed over the years but at the time I had really enjoyed my trip there even though prior I was not expecting very much.
The old, Soviet types were cold and distant, as expected.
I believe it. My husband is of Polish descent. Some of his relatives immigrated on Polish passports, others on Russian passports (none of the relatives who were in the USSR during those dark days were able to leave). It is easy to tell which passport they came on at family gatherings just by observing them.
Australia is large and an incredible country. The Australian people are some of the most nice and down to earth folks I've ever met. In some ways, I think Australia is more like America than even Canada is. Imagine my surprise at watching Kangaroos in the wild go hopping up a hill.
New Zealand. The whole country is beautiful enough to be a national park. The Bay of Islands country up north is pristine. You can even take a bus tour where the bus drives along the beach.
I'm going on a cruise to Australia and New Zealand next January. I am so excited to see kangaroos in the wild!

We did a cruise around New Zealand. It was very good ... but ..... I would not do it again. The only way to see New Zealand is to rent a car or an RV and drive (in my opinion of course).
No, this will be our first trip. I remember you saying you've been to Barcelona. I'd appreciate any travel tips.

Fabulous country and cannot wait to go back.
I've been to both the north and south islands. The best way to see the country is on a tour, by motorcoach. I don't recommend Americans learn how to drive on the "wrong side of the road". I have a friend who tried that and caused an accident literally driving off the rental car lot. Except for Auckland, New Zealand is sparsely populated and a very scenic country. Living there is like living in a national park. You can either take a ferry between the islands or fly. My favorite cities in New Zealand were Wellington and Christchurch.

I have had several suggest the Sintra trip. I am going to seriously consider it. We are definitely going to Toledo, I suspect we won't make it to Arjanjuez because we only have 3-4 days in each city.

At the risk of going off topic ..... we rented a car for the day when we were in Auckland (pre-cruise) and drove down to Rotorua. I found driving on the left to be fine. Sure it takes a few minute to get used to it but, after that, no problem.
