I am already vacation planning for next year! I would like to explore the Carribean. I have only been to two islands: Dominican Republic, where my paternal family lives, and St. Martin. We loved St. Martin but do not want to go back since there is so much of the world to see. I am hoping that I can tell you why we like St. Martin and those of you who know the islands well can recommend a different place.
I like that in St. Martin:
*we could walk to shops and restaurants (I do not like the idea of being in a gated all-inclusive and I don't want to deal with driving/taxis);
*there is some poverty but it did not seem overwhelming;
*no one bothers you on the beaches trying to sell things.
We enjoy holidays where we lay around a lot, swim in the ocean, and have a lot of good food and drink. Availability of activities isn't so important.
Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.
In a lot of the Caribbean it would seem hard to balance out the overwhelming poverty aspect with not being in a gated resort. Probably any of the islands associated with the US would be fine. Cuba for sure, though. I mean, it's crumbling, but it's not unsafe and it's not really succumb to poverty in the traditional sense of the word. Also, a very interesting look into a culture different from a Western one. The beaches look nice, too.
You could go there from a connection in Canada or Mexico and Central America. Possibly another island nation without worrying about the implications of the embargo, I believe. Assuming you're American anyways.

Any of a thousand locations in the US - seriously, you aren't getting any cultural insight by your activities. It's a good relaxing vacation but you don't have to travel out of the country to experience it, no? Just stay home - go to the Gulf Coast, Myrtle Beach, etc.
Heck, buy a blow up kiddie pool and a lawn chair for your back yard - OK that's extreme, I know getting away from home is nice.
I think ALL of the Caribbean countries are more similar than different. If you really want to "see the world"...go somewhere besides the Caribbean! If you want to "chill out"...go to any Caribbean island....relax, man....get on island time!
