I don't recall this aspect of travel being discussed here before.
I found my last trip to be wonderfully cathartic, and spiritually cleansing. My cynicism got dialed way down, I even enjoyed the social experience of riding a bus to the Greyhound depot in Houston when I got off the plane back home.
I've resolved to go at least once a year on a trip for a month or so for no other reason than to iron out the wrinkles in my soul, or actually, just shake it out. Not with any real destination-based travel objective, but just to be taking it easy in a place where I will always be among strangers and I can depend on good and decent people to be civil and welcoming, and shrug off momentary encounters with the few outliers who aren't. Some place cheap enough that I can be a generous tipper and still feel frugal. One living at home seems to accumulate a lot of baggage that just keeps getting heavier, and it's good to get away from it and reconsider the universe and start over.
I never really thought of travel as a "spiritual" experience. Sure, it's nice to get away-- but I never really thought of it as a way of reconsidering the universe. I find my own spirituality way closer to home.
