If it makes a difference, and I'm sure it does, I'm male, early 30's, single.

All my close friends are coupled-up now, and I can only take so much hanging out as a 3rd/5th/7th wheel. Now, I've never been to Las Vegas, and want to check it out sometime before Labor Day. I've done solo cruising before (but not land travel), and had a totally freaking awesome time! Not just in terms of places, but also socially. I met new friends of varying ages within a day onboard, found women to dance with in the club, and more . So I have enough experience with solo cruising to know how fun it can be.

I realize that land travel is a whole different animal, especially a place like Las Vegas, which has been a haven for couples and groups since its early days. It was never planned with solo travelers in mind, with a possible exception of high rollers. (Unlike most cruise ships, where casinos are generally subpar, and the onboard atmosphere is very solo-friendly.) I still want to go to Las Vegas for a weekend getaway, just to say I've been there and maybe see the Stratosphere Tower. I guess I'll go solo if I have to. I already asked my single friends if they want to come with, but they can't go.

Anyway, what do people think of a 30-something man traveling to Las Vegas by himself? Are they "meh, whatever!" about it, or do they think he's pathetic for doing that? No platitudes, please.

Vegas solo is just fine. I've done it for a few days on either end of work trips. You'd be surprised how many couples go BUT do separate things most of the day (hubby in the sports book, wifey at the slots).

Sure it might be uncomfortable sitting alone at a lounge or a show but gambling...sportsbook...having a cigar...all are great solo.

There is nothing wrong or pathetic with traveling solo - anywhere, if you feel comfortable to do so. ( except you get lost easily, feel lonely or bored, need help)
So, go and have fun!!

Traveling solo isn't pathetic at all. I do it all the time because my friends either don't want to go to the places I want to visit or they don't have the time or money. Go for it.

I have no issues with getting bored, considering my solo cruising experiences. I'm concerned because cruises and Las Vegas are vastly different animals. I could wander around the ship by myself, and nobody cared. But in Las Vegas, I'm concerned about becoming That Guy while wandering around on The Strip or Fremont Street by myself. My other concern is more banal: the weather. On a a moving ship, even 100-degree weather feels relatively balmy; while in Las Vegas, winds can make desert heat much worse. I suppose I can stop at the Bellagio fountains and splash water on my face .

As for directions, I've been great with them since I was 5. Many times long before GPS existed, I helped get my family un-lost in a new area. To this day, the only GPS I use in the one in my head. So getting lost isn't an issue for me at all. It's how I found my way around ports of call during my cruise. And if I needed directions, I just approached a local police officer.

I don't like Vegas at all because I don't gamble and I don't like their "shows".

However, Vegas is perfectly fine for solo travellers. There are more solo travellers in Vegas than Yellowstone National Park.

I think it's great! I went on a week-long Mexican cruise by myself when I was 35 and LOVED it! I would get off at the ports and roam around by myself, and the cruise people seated me at a table with other women who were coupled up with sisters/daughters/friends. Now that I'm married, I sometimes WISH that I could travel by myself more now! I go on regular business trips alone to various cities, however, and it's fine too.

This thread is encouraging so far. Keep 'em coming. Can you also suggest activities I can partake in as a solo? Just remember:
* I hate strip clubs and the idea of them. So they're completely out.
* I don't like to gamble, except OTB; horses are fun to bet against.
* I'm not looking to pay more than $50 to attend a show or a tour.

This is a hard question.

Vegas is nothing without casinos, shows and clubs. So what do you enjoy? There are some outdoor activities near Las Vegas(even kayak is possible), and there are some legal brothels in a few small towns in Nevada(free shuttle from Vegas is provided by the brothels).

Traveling solo is awesome IMO. Unless of course you will be lonely trying to have fun by yourself. I thoroughly enjoy travel on my own when it has occurred.
