I just got back from Vegas with my family.

My wife and I thought that the whole cruise ship atmosphere is intended to make you feel like you're in Vegas. With the nude roman statues and the fountains everywhere.

Here's my suggestions for you:
-check out the volcano eruption thing that happens every 30 minutes. The streets get crowded but wandering around the strip in the evening is much more comfortable than doing it during the day.
-try a slot machine as you walk through the Casinos.
-avoid the pan handlers, the scammers and the homeless (some scammers will even approach you in the casino, beware)
-have lunch at bachanal buffett at ceasars palace (warning: it's expensive, but more than likely the best you'll ever experience. try to go at an odd time like 11:48)

I went to Las Vegas for 5 nights/6 days back in 2009 by myself (female, I was mid 40's AANNND I don't drink) and I had fun (although by day 4 I was kinda over it).

I stayed in a hotel on the strip and didn't rent a car. I took the monorail that runs behind the casinos. Each stop leads you into the back entrance of the casino. You have to trek all the way through to get to the actual Strip. All that walking actually helps build up your appetite so when you gouge out at the buffet you don't feel guilty haha

I ate out at the restaurants at the bar, chilled out at a couple of the pools, gambled (slots, bingo and video poker, i'm not really a gambler) mall shopping at Hard Rock and the Fashion Show Mall, seeing the fountains at the Bellagio, Fall of Atlantis at Caesars, Wildlife Habitat at the Flamingo, plus i'm sure there's lots of other free stuff on the Strip and Downtown since 2009.

Protip: ABSOLUTELY DO NOT eat at Benihana's by yourself! I felt like such a freak amongst all those couples at that big table lolol

Vegas is made for single men! There will be plenty of time for Circus-Circus vacations with the wife and kids.

How is going ANYWHERE solo pathetic?

I guess I suffer from chronic patheticism then because I PREFER going solo, anywhere & everwhere.

Unless it's my own kids...kids & I do just fine.

I've been going to Vegas since 2001 most of those solo. Going again this Friday. I PREFER to do Vegas solo. A gf there is fine and fun, but if you gamble, spending time with a gf in Vegas will cut into that time. I golf there also. No one will notice you are solo but so what if they do? At Bellagio's buffet, there is a counter in the center for solo diners.

It's a reasonable concern, given how the American society is largely couple-oriented. So I started this thread to assess the risk of becoming That Guy if I go to Las Vegas by myself. So far, it doesn't seem to be the case. But I want to get as large a sample of opinions as possible.

* I'm not looking to pay more than $50 to attend a show or a tour.
Well you can always go out to eat, skydive las vegas, visit the art museums, visit the desert, hang out at the pool.... there really is no limit.

NOTE: you won't be taking in a show for $50

If you look at the tripadvisor las vegas forum you will find about 1/4 of the posts are about travelling solo. I love Vegas solo. For your first trip you won't need a car. Just checking out the casinos themselves can take 3 days.

That's what I was thinking too. Quality shows are at least double.

OP, how long are you planning to go? The Mob Museum and the Neon Museum are two of my favourite things near downtown Vegas, and I think they may be available on a combo ticket for a discount. I love Fremont Street but it's not something I could do for a few days in a row. If you don't like gambling and won't spend money on shows, what are you looking to do? Are you content to just go in and out of casinos just to look? Just wandering in the summer heat is not a fun option, and the Strip is over 4 miles long.
