Not trying to sound rude, but how on Earth were you able to get a room on airbnb for between 20-50 pounds? Were you renting a room in someone's apartment or something and shared the bathroom in an apartment that was from the city center? I've never heard of someone getting a place that low in central London. Also where did you have these dinners and what did you get? An appetizer and a glass of water?
I didn't stay in central London, because there is no need to. And yes, it was a room in someones apartment. Not a problem for me, I like company.
We had our dinners in places like Chinatown, Camden and near where we lived. We didn't order appetizers and we drank tea and water.

Agree, the museum prices was very high, but there is no need to go inside. If I was going to complain about something, the trains were quite expensive and their pricing system was really confusing.

Most of the main museums in London are free.
I just got back from DC and it was the same thing. I went to all the "must see" museums and all were free except for the Spy Museum. Which museums in DC are you talking about?

The Newseum is sort of expensive. Most of the museums in DC are free, though.
Anyway, I don't mind paying for the tickets. It's the lodging that eats the biggest chuck of my budget.

I did the same with airbnb and thought it was awful.

That's exactly what I did and I hated it. I guess London is great for losing weight.

Some people like museums, especially when it's raining, you have nowhere else to go but interiors, and it rains a lot in London.
Another way to cut costs in London is to go with the European budget hotel route- the Ibis or Motel One option, while small and no frills, is also generally clean and modern. I just did a search on Accor's web site and they've got some Ibis options in decent locations in the $150 or less (VAT included) range for this weekend.

Actually, just like DC, most of the major museums in London are free.
We have found that Key West, Fl. has out priced itself out of our semi-year vacation budget. Prices of Hotels have doubled and in some instances tripled over the last 5 yrs. Greed has taken over & outside investors are trying to transform KW into a "family destination".

I would never spend money to get a room in someone's house while they were there when traveling. It's similar to my reason for not doing a bed and breakfast. I want to come and go without someone seeing me and I don't want to make chit chat. I also stayed at a number of youth hostels from when I was 17-25 sharing bathrooms and the bedrooms. The bedrooms so much didn't bother me (except for when people would fart or have sex while I'm in there), but I hated sharing the bathroom especially the showers. I'm high maintenance but I'm also someone who budgets. I would find a way to cut costs down just in order to find private lodging with my own bathroom. I know part of the appeal of hostels aside from the price is that it's an easy way to meet fellow travelers. At this point in my life, it's not a must for me. My comfort concerns me more than finding someone to go out at night with lol. You can I guess rent a private room in a hostel but many times that ends up costing more or the same as just a standard no thrills hotel room.

I agree. I did that once in London and once in Amsterdam and have since decided that I'll never do that again. They weren't outright horrible, but it just felt really uneasy and awkward.

Well I'm still within that age range but I honestly feel like I have used up all the "hostel quota" in my life lmao. Sometimes it's fine, and I've met some cool/cute/sweet people, but a lot of the times it's just ****ing painful. I once stayed in one in Florence, in summer, and there was no AC. It was one of the worst experiences in my entire life. I also stayed at hostels in Venice and Rome and they were both such disasters as well. There were always people snoring like ****ing elephants. Like I've had enough. Next time I'm traveling I'll get somewhere private, if it's too expensive then I'd just stay in.
