I was surprised at the inexpensive meals in Croatia, even is some of the most touristy areas. Commonly dinner at a nice restaurant for 3 adults, with drinks, an appetizer or two, 3 entrees and sometimes a desert, with a tip was under $80.

However, I should note that we had drinks (mainly Hendricks gin and tonics) in the hotel bar at the Westin in Zagreb that were extremely pricey.

Cheap places that I want to visit again (& again): Thailand, Portugal & Bali _ I would enjoy these places at twice the prices. I haven't been to Croatia in decades but remember it being the surprise highlight of a several months long ramble in Europe, glad to hear it's cheap too - worth seeing then for those who wander.

I've never gone to Penang yet but it's on the very short list.

Actually most of my favorite places have been cheaper. They tend to have more charm. In general.

Egypt - Use Egyptian pounds and you will save a ton. 1 USD equals roughly 18 EGP. I had lunch a couple of times at local restaurants and paid no more than 50 EGP once and 15 EGP at another!

Cuba - many private restaurants, local art, and Airbnb spots. All very affordable.

Thailand - in general.

Turkey - boutique hotel stays are very affordable and there are many. Local shopping, not the tourist traps, that takes TRY. Again affordable.

That doesn't sound particularly cheap, that seems almost as expensive as NYC

Christ man what kind of restaurants do you go to? Me and my friends usually spend $30-40 per person on a dinner with drinks in NYC. $60 per person was the max, and it was because we were drunk and it was Saturday night and we didn't realize that they were charging $8 for one shot of tequila. We were horrified when the bill came

I agree. My girlfriend and I go there a few times a year, and one of our favorite places is The Spotted Pig. Food and drinks and tip for both of us have never been more than about $80-85.

I thought we were talking about upscale dining.

Appetiser; $12 - 15
Entre; $25 - 40
pre dinner drink; $12 - 15
Bottle of wine; $80 - 140

That's easily $130 per person or $400 for three.

And a steakhouse would be even more. For example, Wolfgang's

Appetiser; $14 - 25
Steak; $50 - 55
etc.

New England, especially up into Maine and New Hampshire. If you really want to save a few dollars, go further north into the Maritimes and visit Halifax. Very relaxed pace and friendly people all around.
