I spent 5 months working in NYC last year and would just avoid it like the plague. It blows my mind that anyone would actually visit that place on their own dime.
Since you are in Williamsburg I would web research for good restaurants, pizzerias, cafes, etc., since it is a very hot location now for good chefs to open places & has a crazy amount of hipster places to eat there now. All sorts of ethnic & nouveau styles represented.
Paulie Gee's Pizza is just north of Wmsbg in Greenpoint, on Greenpoint Av, & I would definitely pencil that in for one meal. Walkable if you can manage 15 - 20 minutes or so, but on the subway line too.
Old school highly-recommended Italian-American red sauce places: Bamontes in Wmsburg & Manducatis in LIC, both have been featured in mafia movies/series & fed the casts when on location. (Manducatis also has a Rustica location which is newer.) Different from actual Italian cuisine, strong Neapolitan influence tho.
I would also try to find a resto or bar with a good view of Manhattan around there or in LIC, maybe a rooftop bar if weather permits.
The "L" train takes you right to the edge of the E Village where most of the rest of the interesting, affordable, casual restos are (along with the LES). Thing is they are shutting it down for renovations at some point soon, this is the main artery into Manhattan so worth finding out about, the crowding is bad now at times.
One of the places I love to visit but isn't new is the Cloisters museum. It's modeled on an old European Abbey and is just beautifully done, with great exhibits.
But mostly I just like wandering the Village aimlessly. Been years since I had a chance to do it.
