Those of you who travel at your own expense, on your own time -- what, in your gut and heart and soul, leads you to travel?
Moi, I learned to read phonetically reading the names of places on maps. When I got my first stamp collecting kit, I dove in head first. There was no place to go but -- everywheere.
My most frequent travel is business related, but I try to make it enjoyable by taking in local culture (even if its other american cities). Family travel is typically to places we go a lot, so those trips are more about togetherness, learning (i.e, kids learning how to swim, ski, ride horses, whatever). Memories.
My wife will not agree - but me personally, I like the logistics and planning of travel as well.
I've traveled to around 60 different countries and 49 US states.
Travel for me is a personally enriching experience. I lived in an RV and moved locations monthly. I hit 34 states and drove 40,000 miles in 14 years. While I drove on interstates, I purposely avoided big cities. I visited a lot of national parks & national monuments. I'd hit up the quaint down towns. I'd marvel at the derelict down towns that were ruined by the opening of the local mall.
Currently my international travel is mostly cruises to the Caribbean and an occasional jaunt to Europe. The islands have incredible scenery. Europe is a historical/culinary/architectural overload.
And almost every time I've ventured out of the US, it made me appreciate that I was fortunate enough to have been born in America.
