Hi everyone. Next new years eve (2009) is our 5 year anniversary and I'd like to plan something nice and plan it now to make payments, reservations, etc..I don't fly too well but could take something if I really needed to so 20 hours on a plane is totally out. We've been to NYC and LV for nye but am trying to figure something else out. Budget is medium expensive as its a big deal for us-lets say $3-$5k total for 5-7 days. TIA

Do you prefer to drive? I don't know where you are located, but New Orleans would be a good choice. If you can go longer, NCL has a 7-day western caribbean cruise out of NO on Jan 4th (not too much $$$), or you could just do the Big Easy, which should be really nice at that time of the year. Of course, you'd want to get those reservations quickly because it is a major holiday and the college football bowl game. Or, perhaps search for some romantic bed & breakfast places near where you live - or in a warmer area. It guess it depends on how much "celebrating" you want to do and what type of atmosphere you're looking for. Wish I could be more helpful.

No I appreciate any ideas. I'm in NC but am considering like maybe a Hawaii cruise or maybe like an upper scale Club Med-ish deal. It doesn't necessarily have to be over nye either. Just around the time more than likely early-mid Jan.

I'd pick Key West. It is within driving range of you and it is usually warm in the winter. There are some great bars and restaurants there and you can take a short cruise or spend a couple of nights at one of the other, smaller Keys if you want to. The only drawback is that they don't have any casinos there, but hey you can't have everything. I'm told there are some precious bed and breakfasts there also.

Why not take a trip to Europe? It should be well within your budget, and different than someplace in the US. You don't say where you live in NC - it matters when trying to find nonstop flights. But you can go to many cities (Madrid, Berlin, London, Paris, etc.) in Europe for around $1K a person, give or take $150 depending on where you are going. That is a big chunk of your budget, but leaves plenty of money for a nice hotel, good restaurants, and great sites that will give you a great trip.

Mexico is a good place. Iberostar Paraiso Maya is a wonderful resort. They also have other resorts in Mexico but also in Europe. Some exotic places and not too badly priced. Worth looking into.....

All great ideas~if you want warm, try Key West, or Mexico. Many good flights and packages available. All inclusives are nice since you don't have to make decision about where to eat meals, everything is included. A cruise leaving from Miami or Ft. Lauderdale might work for you. Rates are great and they stay in the Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico.
