I'm planning a last minute trip across the US from Kentucky to Washington state. I'm drivin' straight through with a pregnant girlfriend. Does anyone have any suggestions on the route I should take? I really don't want us to get stranded by the weather. My first thought was to go through St. Louis and then head southwest. If it makes a difference, we're drivin' a newer Impala.
Can I suggest something? Take a train. This has been a terrible winter so far with all the blizzards. If you're at all in question of your driving ablilities in the snow or the forecast doesn't look good, you should either take the train, fly, or do like you said and go the southern route. It's fine once you get to Washington, but you are risking it going through the midwest.
I'd go South to I-40, take that across to Barstow, CA. There, you'll take CA 58 over to I-5. Take that North to WA. Where in WA are you going? If you're not ending up somewhere on the I-5 corridor in Western WA, there's some mountain passes you'll probably have to negotiate...
