Hey!
My name is Andrew. I am moving back to Denver from Dallas in 4 weeks. I was told that taking I35 o I70 was a waste of time! I was told that 285 through Amarillo and up through Raton Pass was quicker! I have a v4 VW Jetta that does not like mountain driving. Is the drive from Raton, NM to Trinidad going to be hard on my car? Any suggestions or comments about this route are appreciated!

Andrew! Raton Pass is one of the easiest passes in the state to go through. it's fairly hilly and tops out at 7834 ft., if memory serves me right. I've been over that pass dozens of times, I worked on a pipeline project busing workers to the line. We moteled in Raton.

And I know that route you are taking as well. It's actually 287 (285 goes through SE New Mexico from Santa Fe to Roswell, Carlsbad, then to Pecos, Tx.) You can go 2 ways. One is 87 out of Dumas west to the NM border, and then heading towards I-25 and north over the pass. You can also stay on 287 that goes through the top of the Texas panhandle, through the Oklahoma panhandle and winds through SE Colorado until you hit Interstate 70 at Limon. It's an easy drive as no mountains are involved.

Staying of 287 is shorter and you avoid the urban areas of Pueblo and Colorado Springs.

The downsides are the small towns to go through (not really much of a problem) and the monotony of the landscape. It's all great plains.

I-40 & 10 have no mountain passes that you'd have to worry about.

Isn't that I-25?
Dude that's an interstate highway, double tractor-trailers by the thousands make that route every day of the year...I am sure your little VW can manage it.

edit: YIKES....2010...caught be a necroposter!
