We drove through the Sunnyside area several weeks ago. We are wondering about a crop that is grown there. There were very tall poles with a plant growing up them. Kiwis? Green beans? We haven’t seen them anywhere else.

Probably you are looking at hops. Yakima county grows 75% of US hops production.

If you are not from around here, you probably have not seen hops growing before.

Aha, thank-you. I didn't know that. Born and raised on west side of Cascades. I have never seen them as a crop before. Mainly in Eastern Washington, we see grapes, apples, pears, cherries and increasingly vineyards. On the west side we grow blueberries, strawberries, raspberries.

Stay out of Sunnyside. I watched the Phil Donahue show from 1992 and saw a kid was raped by his classmates in the high school over there. Very high crime. Very scary. I would never go there after reading about that.

Awful crimes can happen anywhere. To call Sunnyside out without actual crime stats is misleading.

So here are some actual crime stats:

http://www.usa.com/rank/washington-s...-city-rank.htm

As you can see, Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane, and the Seattle suburbs of Lynnwood, Federal Way, and Renton all have much higher crime rates than Sunnyside.

I shop in Sunnyside all the time and don't have any problems. One can look at the "data" side of City Data and see statistics for Sunnyside. That said if I am going to live out here in the sticks, I want to live outside any city limit, so I can have an acreage and some room/privacy.
