While a Florida resident I had a roommate who was arrested for child molestation in February 2011. The alleged victim was his 6 year old daughter.
The day after he was arrested the police confiscated his PC as well as everything from his and her bedrooms. They asked me if I would be willing to give a DNA sample and take a polygraph.
Of course... I had nothing to hide. I did just that and was told that I would be contacted if anything else was needed. I immediately moved out.
2 months later I got a job in Seattle and moved cross country.
On Tuesday I got a call from the DA office in FL letting me know that I would be contacted by the prosecuting attorney and a victim board regarding the case. I got a call from the latter yesterday and was told I was a "big" witness because I lived in the house. I have yet to hear from the PA but was told the trial date is 2/4 after yet another continuance.
I told investigators back in 2/2011 that I never witnessed anything inappropriate. All I can testify to is his personal lifestyle and how he was around his daughter.
Why would the prosecution want me to testify? Shouldn't I expect to hear from the defense? He did spend a lot of time on online porn (adult to my knowledge) and had random women over 3-4 nights a week.
To me that's not proof he's a child molester.
I looked up his case online and he's been charged with TWO counts each of aggravated child molestation... sexual battery... and false statements to police.
They apparently think you know something important -- probably alibi type stuff is my guess. You would at least have a sense of who he was with and when.
Believe me, the defense will be in touch too, unless the legal team is stupid. OR if your ex-roomie thinks you know something that would make him look bad. Part of the weirdness of being a witness in a criminal case is that you don't know if you know anything, or what it means even if you do.
You may be a planned rebuttal witness for the defense; your testimony could possibly cast doubt on your ex-roomie's guilt. Or you could be a corroboration witness for the prosecution if they have a case built around the guy being a very careful planner or something.
Any way it lands, you might never know why you are testifying. Witnesses are very often single pieces- it's only after all of them have testified that a jury can see the entire picture.
And it's always possible you may never be called to testify at all, but you'll have to go if they summon you, most likely.

Why not just call the district attorney prosecuting the case and ask them? They want you for a reason, so a simple phone call could handle everything.

The PA called me on Thursday and I talked to her for about 10 mins... she said "you will be getting a subpoena in the mail but at this point I am unsure if I am going to need you" and that was pretty much it... I told her that I didn't see how I could be much help unless they wanted me to testify to his lifestyle around the house.
I didn't see anything inappropriate and he was IMHO a good dad to his daughter.
The PA also made the comment "I don't charge cases unless I am confident I can win" so I'm guessing they have some evidence on him although she didn't go into details with me.
The trial date is Feb 4th... it's been continued a few times already. I asked if I could expect a call from the defense attorney and was told by the PA that the defense team hasn't asked for the witness list yet. To me that's kinda weird but whatever...

Right,and I wasn't trying to imply that but you never know what they are going to try to offer up as a defense and create doubt. Look at the Casey Anthony case, at the last minute they tried to implicate the father George in opening arguments. That's probably why they took your DNA and gave you the polygraph...to specifically rule you out and seal the deal, that only he could have done it.
