In all honesty, we were all teenagers before. Back in the day I would probably thought it harmless to do something like that too. A prank, nothing else. In a teenager's mind, I'm pretty sure they thought "oh we'll scare them and possibly dent up somebody's car" but didn't think it would actually kill or maim someone. That's how teenagers think. Especially if they were smoking weed or drinking too... they likely saw it as a 'prank' and didn't expect all of this to happen.
HOWEVER, having said that, I'm not defending them but I understand them. I do think they should be punished accordingly. The injuries this woman sustained are brutal... she'll never be the same again...

The oldest one in the group admitted that "they planned to do some damage". It was late at night, so they also thought they would never be caught. This is way beyond prank. Maybe someone should have taught them in high school science the effect of a five-pound weight being dropped from that height onto a moving object. But then again, they probably wouldn't have paid attention anyway.

Even then, doing damage to someone else's property is still criminal mischief. No matter what they meant to do harm. Maybe not physical harm, but at least harm to someone else's property and the financial harm that comes with that. Either way, old enough to know that is not a good thing to do.
Here in Michigan you can charge someone as an adult at any age. These kids were more than old enough to know they could have killed her and that dead is forever, so I say this is cool with me.
I suppose the only good that might come of this would be that if any youth out there are thinking of having *fun* this way, they'll see what the consequences will be.

The problem with that is that many teenagers and young people don't think far enough ahead to even consider any consequences that may happen.
The victim is a teacher. Does that make the crime worse than if it was another person?
I don't think it makes the crime worse. It is horrendous that anyone has to endure something so senseless. They had no way of telling who they might hit.
