Hello,

We are contemplating a move from Colorado next year and would love to live in the downtown/University area. As we have two elementary-aged kids, schools are an important factor in where we eventually decide to settle.

We've received advice to stay away from all downtown schools and head for the excellent school district in the foothills, but we have also been told that there are several great magnet programs where our kids can receive a quality education.

We've heard that Sam Hughes Elem. is good (so that neighborhood sounds appealing), but we've also been told that finding a high-quality middle school in the area will be tough. We don't want to go the private school route.

Our kids currently attend a magnet school for the academically advanced/gifted. Is there anything like that in downtown Tucson? Someone recommended the magnet program at Borton Elementary. Does anyone have any personal experience with that program who would be willing to share their thoughts?

It's hard to make the decision to uproot my whole family when our kids are getting a great education where they are now, but I am SO over our cold Colorado winters.

Thanks so much in advance--any help or advice will be greatly appreciated!

Check out BASIS. It is a bit east of the university area, but top notch academics.
