The house that we just moved from in Wheaton was about 3 blocks from train tracks. We had lots of trees and vegetation around so it wasn't loud at all. I actually sort of liked hearing the trains at night when I went to sleep. I wouldn't want to live any closer though.

If a train ever comes off the rails, things can spread pretty far. They carry chemicals in large quantities. Chlorine, propane, high explosives, etc. Stuff that can't be carried on the highway goes by rail. it's worth considering the prevailing winds even a mile or so away.

Sadly for the owner, many people feel it's not a good location. They just drastically lowered the price.

140' away is nuts. They are building a tract of homes in my city that is about 80 homes located between a hill and train tracks the furthest homes will be about 2000' and the closest maybe 150'. The only entrance to them is under the tracks, below a small bridge that used to provide storm runoff and its now a road. They are selling from the low $400,000's and the development is named Trestles. I wouldn't live in there if it were a gift. The passing trains will be very annoying but the bigger problem is the constant air horns sounding at the close by intersections all day and all night.

Default mountain view ranch

Anyone know anything about mountain view ranch lots in Vail? Are these too close to the aforementioned railroad tracks?

I've been by there many times on visits to Tucson. Google Map is your friend:
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Mo...4e9ce17267d667

One of the busiest transcontinental rail lines in the USA is approximately 1/2 to 1 mile north depending on where you are in the development. Long freight trains go by there several times an hour, 24x7. There is a grade level road crossing at Colossal Cave Rd about 1.5 miles northwest, so the trains are required by law to blast super-loud air horns three times approaching that crossing.

One of the busiest transcontinental truck routes in the USA, I-10, borders the south side of this development. The further you are from I-10, the closer you are to the rail lines, and vice versa.

I like to leave windows open at night during mild temperature seasons. I don't think I would be able to sleep if I lived in that location.

If you do a right click on a google map, you get a little menu with a "measure distance" option. You can set your points, and figure distance. Depending upon where you are in Mountain View Ranch, it looks to be between 1 - 1.5 miles away from the track.

Default mountain view ranch

So is the 1-1 1/2 miles from the tracks a good enough distance to not hear the trains super loud whistles?
I have never lived near railroad tracks before. So will the walls be shaking like in the movie "My Cousin Vinny"
