I'm not obsessed with the issue by any means and don't find it objectionable anywhere, but I'd imagine it's the cleanest in the areas closest to the mountains.

Typically in the foothills above the valley. Inversion layer holding in particulates can be quite pronounced especially during the winter.

Thank you, but what does that mean? LOL.

Could anyone maybe give me some specific cities or directions regarding where the air is cleanest?

Generally speaking, Phriend . . . unlike many cities, including Phoenix, air quality is not an issue in the Tucson area.

However, most would agree the higher up (read: North) the better.

Air quality is DEFINTELY an issue in Tucson. Any place that is in a heavily populated desert valley is going to have issues with air quality. Air pollution is Tucson is NOWHERE close to that of Phoenix, but it is still present.

That said, the cleanest air will likely be found in the northern and western Foothills.

Having been here since 1971, I have seen the air clear considerably. The mines have shut down so no smelter smoke for years now. Biggest problem is pollen from non native plants and trees which are now not allowed to be planted. This year has been especially windy and dry - 2% to 6% humidity so it is dusty. But on the other hand, mold is not a problem.

as granny said, Tucson also deals with blowing dust, plant pollen, "particulates".....

the "inversion layer" is a basin phenomenon (like LA) in which cold air is "trapped" beneath warm air in the winter and holds all the gunk from the city down low....result is a pronounced brown cloud and it can look really messy....

the entire Tucson area never seems polluted or dirty (the air) to me.....wind can kick up dust, though, and there's that inversion layer thing
